Harvest Festival 2008!
Thanks to
all for making the Harvest Festival a huge success!
This years
1st annual Harvest Festival was a celebration of the school's vocational
programs and hard work. Students
celebrated the years accomplishments with all three campuses as well as members
of the community from sending districts, social service agencies and parents as
well.
Besides a surprise
teachers award for Shannon Lamb, we focused on eating local food and having fun
in Kindle Farm fashion. After we ate
pork loin and mashed potatoes with all the trimmings there were great
activities. Among the activities you
might have seen, were a wood splitting competition, bike races, pumpkin carving
as well as wilderness activities.
Our Saxton's
River vocational programs brought down their sheep and rabbits to demonstrate to
the community their focus on animal husbandry. Although we hope to eat some of
our own animals next year, it was a fun way to be reminded of our connection to
local livestock and the hard work of the Saxtons River
community which includes raising calves for the Grafton Cheese Co., and selling
eggs to the local grocery stores.
Our Newfane
garden has supplied a large amount of food this year. At the beginning of the
school year, about 85 percent of the school's food came from the fields outside
and the students sold produce at the Townshend Farmer's Market as well as to
local stores in the area.
About 50
pounds of potatoes were served at the Harvest Festival meal Friday and the rest
of the table was piled with cabbage, onions, squash and garlic from the school
gardens.
The students
showed a serious amount of pride in Kindle Farm as they ushered in guests, gave
tours, served appetizers and lunch, played games, and provided appropriate
security for the event. As usual, the positive
student behavior continues to reinforce our belief that Kindle Farm is a
special place. As the years role on, you may remember the 1st of our
annual harvest festivals!
Thanks
again to all who came, worked and played with style.
